Overwintering is the term we use to describe what happens when pests enter your home and spend the winter months keeping warm and hibernating within the walls and dark spaces of your home. In the fall, when temperatures start to get below 35 degrees Fahrenheit and they days get shorter, certain pests like Asian beetles, cluster flies, and stink bugs start to look for warm places to spend the winter. They then find a cozy place, usually within the walls, and stay still all winter.

So that begs the question, should you do anything about them? If they’re just hibernating, they’re not bothering anyone, right? While that is true for now, come spring, these pests will be found all over your house while they look for ways to get back outside. Temperatures rising will trigger them to start emerging. Usually when temperatures start to reach 45 degrees Fahrenheit, they will slowly start to wake, with full movement typically happening around 70 degrees Fahrenheit.

If you’re a Cincinnati/Tri-State area resident, you know, temperatures can be wildly different day to day in both the fall and spring, which can lead to these pests being confused and starting to emerge earlier than expected. This can draw out the period where you will be forced to deal with sleepy insects roaming your home.

The best treatment for these types of pests is either prevention with our monthly treatment plans, or treatment as soon as possible once you see them start to congregate in and around your home in the fall. However, if you missed that crucial window, there are still methods we can use to deal with the infestation and mitigate the pest’s presence in your home come spring.

If you saw any of these wintering pests around your home in the fall, give us a call today for a FREE no-pressure inspection. If you’re not happy with the estimated amount, we’ll leave, no harm done.

We would also highly suggest giving us a call in the spring to get set up on one of our affordable monthly treatment plans.
